Intermezzo

2022 — present

The series takes its name from the homonymous exhibition, opened in October 2022 at the Cultural Center "Brancoveanu Palaces at the Gates of Bucharest" in Mogosoaia, created together with Laura Niculescu. The title names exactly what it was: an interval, not a result — the transitional moment between a more distilled, more controlled stage of my painting, and a direction that was still unformed.

The earliest works in the series still hold the quiet and transparency of the previous stage — diffuse horizons, pastel palette, fine, almost restrained gesture. As the series progresses, this quiet begins to give way: the filter thins, the gesture thickens, the image moves closer to a direct kind of painting, unnegotiated with the viewer. Intermezzo follows exactly this process — not a sudden break, but a gradual slide from abstraction toward visceral expression, captured work by work.

Visually, the series functions as a state of transition — it keeps the compositional research structure from earlier series, but begins to push against it, testing how much a controlled image can withstand before giving way to raw, unfiltered gesture.
